YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNT HAS BEEN COMPROMISED

You are not alone if your web-based email or social network account has been hijacked.

If you can still get into your account, change your password immediately. Then, scan your computer for malware that might steal your password. Use instructions on this page.

If you are locked out of your account, you're in for a bigger battle. First, you have to prove to the account provider that you are the account owner. So, if you didn't fill out the secret question when you signed up or if you didn't put your actual birthday, you will have no choice but to start all over again with a new account.

If you're locked out of Gmail, click on "Can't access your account?" Google will ask for secondary e-mail addresses and mobile phone numbers you have supplied previously to validate you are you. If you haven’t provided this information, you’ll be asked to fill out a form with a set of questions designed to verify you are the real Google account owner.

If your Facebook account is hijacked, visit this help page to submit a report. If you still have access to the email address you use for Facebook, it will be fairly easy to get your account back. If you do not have access to your email address, you will have to verify your identity to get your account corrected.

None of these steps will be easy or will happen immediately. It could take days or weeks before you have access to your accounts again. Some people never get their accounts back and have to start all over again. To avoid, this, be very careful about using your email and Facebook at public locations such as coffee shops or airports. If you must use your account at these locations, change your password either when you get home or when you are on a private network.
