CREATE A SECURE PASSWORD EASILY

We all hear about how we must have secure passwords. But most of us still use our pets name or the kids initials and maybe, if a number is required, we throw in a 1 or a 9. That's not secure. There's an easy way to make a secure password. You can use this method for all your passwords or just the ones you need secure. How may different passwords do you need? Four or five at the most. You don't have to keep unique passwords for every site you visit. All your online newspapers, for example, can have the same password because it won't hurt so much if someone breaks into those. Facebook and Twitter should have secure passwords because someone could do real damage hacking into your social media sites. Reserve your strongest, most distinct passwords for the few very important services that, if cracked, could do the most damage—your bank account, your computer, and most of all your e-mail, which often contains the keys to everything else in your life.

Here is the surefire way to create a secure password in a few easy steps.
  1. Start with an original but memorable phrase. For this exercise, let's use these two sentences: We all live in a yellow submarine and My first car was a real lemon so I bought a Toyota. The phrase can have something to do with your life or it can be a random collection of words. I like to use a song lyric because I can remember them. Just pick something you can remember.  And that's the key - because you can remember the phrase, you don't have to write it down.
  2. Turn your phrase into an acronym. Be sure to use some numbers, symbols and capital letters. We all live in a yellow submarine  becomes Wal1aYS, and My first car was a real lemon so I bought a Toyota is M1stCwarlsIbaT.
  3. That's it—you're done. These mnemonic passwords are hard to forget, but they contain no guessable English words.
  4. Another way to create passwords is to start with a base password that you use everywhere. For this exercise, let's say my base password is 587veree which was an address in my childhood neighborhood. Now, I can start with that password and then tailor each needed password to the site I need it for. For example, on Facebook and can start with 587veree and then add FB to make the password F587vereeB. I can do this with any site and this way every site has a unique password.
  5. To be sure, this is more of a hassle than what you're doing now—but what you're doing now is going to come back to bite you. These days, we're all dishing personal information all the time; you may think that your password is totally unguessable, but it's not. Just go ahead and make some new passwords right now. Trust me, you'll feel better.
